My United Nations Class
Recently, I had the experience of teaching seven international students in one of my Math classes. There were threex) students from Germany, two students from Brazil, and one student each from Mexico and Hong Kong. Since I had five different nations represented I labeled it as my "United Nations" class, Not only did these students have the opportunity to interact with our Canadian students, they also interacted with each other. As a result, there seemed to be a lot of friendships being built. In the past when I've had one or two international students in my class, they often were more reserved, not as outgoing. With my United Nations class I found them very outgoing, very relaxed in class. They had no problem mingling with other students, often tutoring students through difficulties within the assignments. They could also interpret and explain some of the words more fully to each other, thus making my job much easier. I felt that these students really enjoyed their time together. When the semester ended, they wanted a picture of the group of seven and me as a keepsake. The German students even gave me an open invitation to drop by and visit them if I ever came to Germany. This class and these seven students were certainly a memorable experience - a highlight of my teaching career. Most enjoyable school year, 2005-2006.
